The trial of the Mumbai gang rape case has opened, to little to no interest from media in India. The attackers sit in the back of the court room, have all plead ‘not guilty’ and do not appear the least worried about the arguments being presented by lawyers. Police report, the accused have committed at least five rapes in the same location. Out of boredom, these acts of atrocity have become routine for them. Their casual coolness, reflects how invisible rape is in India and how many victims remain silent. The seriousness of the crime did not sink in, until their arrest. The journalist, who was accompanied by her colleague, a 21 year old man, were interns at an English language publication and were covering the area of the ruins as part of their essay. While the duo was photographing the last mill ruin, they encountered two of the attackers. The two attackers led the journalist to a route deeper into the ruins, claiming there were “better pictures.” After working a half hour at the location, that is when the rest of the men showed up. The group of men accused the woman’s colleague of being a murder suspect, tying him up with belts and that is when the attack commenced. The group let the couple go afterwards, the woman and her colleague went straight to the hospital and reported the incident.

It’s a shame, that in other parts of the world rape is not held as a serious matter. Men do not fear punishment for their crimes, because they believe they are “entitled.” Law enforcement now hold rape a serious matter in India, especially after the infamous Delhi case that reached news stands worldwide.
