family of teenager sentenced to death seeks new trial

In 1944, a teenager was sentenced to death in the South for a crime he did not commit. It sounds like the plot out of a movie, but this story is very much real life. 14 year old George Stinney was sentenced to death in South Carolina and became the youngest person in the history of the state to be put to death. He was killed by the electric chair, after being found guilty of the murders of two little white girls. To read more, click below.

Supporters and family of Stinney are asking a judge to grant George a new trial! The petition states that the teenager was convicted on a forced confession by racist police officers. They explained that during a time where society was segregated, whites wanted to blame a black for the death of two little white girls, who were beaten to death in Clarendon County. There was no physical evidence tying Stinney to the murder, and since then all documents surrounding the case have disappeared! The petition also includes two sworn statements of George’s siblings, who state they were with their brother all day that he allegedly committed the murder.

I hope after all these years, George finally gets his name cleared! R.I.P.
