alert grandma tips off officials after paroled perv moves near school

A paroled child molester moved to an apartment too close to an elementary school in Bronxdale. 28 year old Roland Marrero, who was convicted of molesting a 5 year old boy, moved to an Mathews Ave apartment building less than the 700 feet from P.S. 357. Officials were tipped off by a concerned grandma, Edith Blitzer. Blitzer learned of Marrero’s arrival in the neighborhood via an email alert. To read more, click below.

An error on behalf of New York officials allowed Marrero to move close to a school, despite state laws against convicted child offenders. Because the elementary school just opened in September, that may be part of the reason it went unnoticed. Under Senator Jeff Klein, residents have the right to be notified when sex offenders move to their neighborhoods. Thanks to this legislation, the state’s blunder was noticed before any children could be put in danger.
