A teacher at The Charter Schools of Boynton Beach in Florida has been suspended for giving her 8th grade students an English lesson using Lil Wayne lyrics. Although that sounds like a class I would LOVE to be in, the parents of the kids are outraged due to the explicit content in the lyrics. The teacher used Wayne’s “6 Foot, 7 Foot” song off of his The Carter IV album.

A representative from the school said, “The lesson was for students to learn to identify literary devices. The teacher had already introduced Edgar Allen Poe and Shakespeare. Students were having difficulty grasping the concepts of literary devices such as: pun, simile, metaphor, so the teacher used colloquial material. This material did not meet the school’s standards and was not approved. The teacher recognizes that it was totally inappropriate for a school assignment.”

Do you think using material such as rap lyrics to help kids grasp certain concepts in the classroom is a good idea? Drop your thoughts in the comment box below.
