Danny became overly obsessed with selfies at the age of 15 when he first began taking them for Facebook. He started getting comments on them and soon set his sights on having the perfect selfie every time he wanted to post a new picture. Bowman started to spend more than 10 hours a day taking about 200 pictures, he dropped out of school, lost 30 pounds and didn’t leave his house for 6 months.

One day he went on the deep end and tried to commit suicide because he failed at taking the selfie he really wanted. Thank goodness his mother was there to save his life. She then took him to Dr. David Veal, a psychiatrist who diagnosed him with body dysmorphic disorder. He says the issue wasn’t vanity, but mental.

Bowman has been recovering and no longer has an iPhone addiction. He told the Mirror, “I was constantly in search of taking the perfect selfie and when I realized I couldn’t, I wanted to die. I lost my friends, my education, my health and almost my life”. I wish him the best of luck on his road to recovery!
