This is big news!! It was rumored the past week or so but I don’t think many people actually thought the Eagles would do it. The team just announced that they have released star receiver DeSean Jackson, and it seems it doesn’t have much to do with football itself. Last season was Jackson’s best year as a pro with 82 catches for 1,332 yards and 9 touchdowns. Not too mention he is a perfect fit for the style of offense that the Eagles play. So it would seem crazy that the team let him go for football reasons. Instead it seems they are very concerned with his gang affiliation and the people he hangs out with. Hit the jump.

According to NJ.COM the team has concerns about Jackson’s continued association with reputed Los Angeles street gang members who have been connected to two homicides since 2010. A bad attitude, an inconsistent work ethic, missed meetings and a lack of chemistry with head coach Chip Kelly are the reasons, sources told NJ.com. And when the Eagles looked more deeply into why Jackson was missing meetings, they found that his friends were becoming a more powerful and negative influence in his life.

Because he is owed over $10 million dollars next season it became very clear that trading him was going to be very difficult. Not many teams were going to be willing to take on that type of contract, especially knowing that if they wait things out they might be able to get him as a free agent if he was released. That is now exactly what happened, but with the whole Aaron Hernandez saga still fresh in the minds of NFL personnel, will many teams show the interest you would expect in a playmaker like DeSean.

If a team does in fact sign him they will immediately be getting an important asset on the field that will improve any offense. He will definitely be taking a pay cut as no team is going to offer him anything close to the $10 million he was expected to make next year.
