Erykah Badu

When Erykah Badu flew in, to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ for the Swaziland King’s 46th birthday, I’m sure she did not expect the tons of criticism coming at her from those opposing her performance!

Activists have joined forces in what seems to be the wrong cause, as they gear their focus on scrutinizing the Hip Hop/R&B vocalist, Erykah Badu.

“She owes us all an explanation. The king is a kleptocrat who lives in the lap of obscene luxury while most of his countrymen toil in abject poverty for less than $2 a day,” the US-based Human Rights Foundation’s Alex Gladstein said in a statement.

Badu has responded back to the critics by stating that her performance was a favor to her friend Jacob ‘The Jeweler’ Arobo, who was actually throwing the celebration for the king. During the celebrations , Badu flew in, sang happy birthday to the Swazi king who is also considered to be Africa’s last absolute monarch, and stayed for the rest of the celebrations.

Badu tweeted in her defense that, “All the people were smiling when I sang. I was smiling. We ALL felt good in that moment,”, She continued to state that while the many activists are focusing on her performance, there are still issues greater affecting those in Africa, that deserve the attention.
