Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay was officially charged with two misdemeanors after a late night driving arrest on March 16.  He was charged with one count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and one count of operating a vehicle with a controlled substance or its metabolite in the body.  Irsay was operating a vehicle under the influence but escapes the more serious drug possession charge.  To express his gratitude, Irsay’s attorney issued a statement thanking the prosecutors.

“We want to thank the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office for its professionalism in its investigation regarding Mr. Irsay and for devoting the necessary care and attention to determine the facts in this matter did not warrant the filing of felony charges relative to Mr. Irsay’s prescription medications,” the statement read, via Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star. “Mr. Irsay will deal with the remaining misdemeanor charges through the judicial process.”

Irsay could still face jail time as well as suspension from the league.  The case will set a precedent as many eyes will watch to see how commissioner Roger Goodell treats an owner as opposed to players who’ve also been arrested for DUI.
