Aaliyah

It was finally announced this week that 17-year-old Disney actress Zendaya Coleman would play the late Aaliyah in a biopic that has been in talks for such a long time, and it was also revealed that it would air on the Lifetime network. However, it seems as though Aaliyah’s family isn’t on board!

Lifetime plans to start filming this summer, but Aaliyah’s uncle and former manager, Barry Hankerson, tells us the family is very upset that no one from the network contacted them about the movie, and they plan to block any attempt on Lifetime’s part to use any of Aaliyah’s music. They’ve apparently hired a lawyer and will do everything they can to block release of the flick. He adds, though, that while they’re not opposed to a big, theatrical film, they feel a TV movie is too small for someone as big as Aaliyah.

While I do kind of agree with them, I also feel Lifetime definitely does some amazing films, and TV movies don’t always go in vain. Look at the TLC biopic! I am confused as to how they’re going forward on a movie about her life without the family on board, though. SOMEONE has to be signing off on something somewhere, no?
