While there has been plenty of controversy surrounding the upcoming Aaliyah biopic, the show will go on. As production continues, it has been revealed that the film, which is reportedly going to depict her life from when she was 10 up to her death, will closely cover her relationship with R. Kelly. I mean, how could it not? Being that the two got illegally married when the singer was just 15. Find out more after the jump!
“Aaliyah’s personal and professional relationship with R. Kelly will be explored with care in the film as we set out to depict her life with the utmost respect. Above all else, it’s our hope to inspire an entirely new generation with her music and larger-than-life talent,” Executive Producer Debra Martin Chase told Page Six.
R Kelly was a mentor to Aaliyah and worked closely with her as co-writer on “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number.” It wasn’t long until rumors flew that the two were together.
In 1994, the couple was wed in the state of Illinois according to a marriage certificate that was unveiled by Vibe Magazine in 1995. While they denied the union at first, the proof was right there on paper.
The certificate falsely listed Aaliyah as 18 years old, making the marriage illegal. Her parents later annulled the marriage.

The “King” R-Kelly and well remembered “Princess” Aaliyah of r&b music somehow have the story of illegal marriage together. It’s such a bad thing that they did by getting married with Aaliyah being so young. The least they could have done is kept their love quite until Aaliyah was of age. I think this is why R Kelly was marked as a pervert for most of his career. It’s too bad because they both are the biggest names and it always comes back to R Kelly marrying Aaliyah illegally.
