Rory McIlroy shot 71 Sunday to win by two strokes over Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia.  It was McIlroy’s third career major. He has also won a PGA and a U.S. Open.  Rory became the third man in Masters era to win 3 majors before turning 26, joining Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.  He wasn’t the only winner however, his father Gerry McIlroy was so confident in his son ten years ago, he’s now cashing in on a bet he placed on the young phenom.

When Rory McIlroy was 15 years old, he was already showing signs of becoming the next great European golfer. He helped the European team win the Junior Ryder Cup in 2004 and went on to win a number of amateur titles. His father, Gerry, decided to put some money him. Gerry McIlroy and a group of three friends put money on Rory to win the British Open before the age of 26. McIlroy, who has won the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, turned 25 in May.

Gerry and his friends put up £400 — £100 each and will cash in for £200,000 pounds, or about $85,400 per person with Rory’s win.
