The Spurs made history today when they announced the hiring of WNBA Superstar Becky Hammond as first full time female assistant coach ever! Hit the jump for details!

Via The New York Times:

“Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball I.Q., work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs,” Coach Gregg Popovich said Tuesday in a statement.
Hammon said that Popovich made it clear to her that the hiring was strictly related to her qualifications in basketball. “He says, ‘It just so happens you’re a woman,’ ” Hammon said.

Around the basketball community, it was not surprising that the Spurs were the first organization to make a woman a full-time coach. They are often praised for applying innovative and outside-the-box thinking to their basketball operations.

Becky Hammond has played in the WNBA for 16 seasons and was named as one of the best fifteen players in history. Best known for her time with the New York Liberty, Hammond is a basketball legend and an inspiration!
