The words leader and JR Smith typically do not get used in the same sentence. Smith tends to come across as the stereotypical self-serving athlete who is only worried about getting his on the court and not much else. However looks can be deceiving and there are numerous stories of him being a good guy as well. It seems he may be maturing as he has been in the NBA for quite some time now and is ready to focus on being a leader on this young Knicks team. Hit the jump.

Smith is that type of player who can lose a game for a team all by himself when he is on his nonsense on the court. Those games when he is just taking ridiculous shot after ridiculous shot and not hitting anything. There are also games however where Smith can win a game by himself when he gets hot and focuses on the team concept and plays within that. He is ready to be a leader now and take on the role of big bro to some of the younger guys on the team.

“Be a leader,” Smith said in an interview with ESPNNewYork.com on Thursday at his foundation’s annual golf fundraiser. “We’ve got so many younger guys around. A lot of the older guys left within the last two years. So be more of a leader and help out.”

“Just ‘show instead of say’ and stuff like that,” Smith, speaking at his fundraiser for the J.R. Smith Youth Foundation at Eagle Ridge Golf Club, said when asked about his leadership approach. “‘Rasheed Wallace, Jason Kidd, those guys led by example and that’s what I’m going to try to do.”

In the meantime before the season starts, JR is keeping himself busy with some fine females with very ample backsides. That’s what I call a good way to get warmed up for the year!
