The NFL finds out about everything, even if you didn’t mean to hide something from them. There are reports that there was a phone call between Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Vikings all world running back Adrian Peterson and the call centered around possibly getting Peterson to the Cowboys. Obviously Jerry would love that but AP is still under contract and now that the details of the call were leaked out, everyone involved is trying to cover their a**, but it may be too late.

In a lengthy profile of Jerry Jones for ESPN’s Outside The Lines, Don Van Natta Jr. wrote about a phone call that the Cowboys owner shared with Peterson back in June. Van Natta was with Jones in his private suite at the time a phone was handed to Jerry that had Peterson on the other line.

“Well, I understand, Adrian,” Van Natta heard Jones tell Peterson. “I’d like that, too … Well, I love your story. I love your daddy’s story. I’ve always respected what you’ve been about. I’ve always been a fan of yours.”

It quickly became clear what the two were discussing.

“Well, we’ll see what we can do, if we can make that happen,” Jones said. “Hmm hmm … I’d like that, too … Well, we’re talking pig Latin here, but let’s see if we can do that … We’re talking pig Latin here, but let’s see what we can do about that. OK, Adrian, thanks.”

This call causes many potential problems. The NFL will look into if any tampering occurred and if they say yes, the Cowboys could be fined alot of money or have draft picks taken away. Anytime a player under contract contacts another team, even if it’s for small talk, that team is required to report it to someone affiliated with the players team, which Jones never did in this case. Jones claims he never felt the call was anything close to tampering and that is why he didn’t report it. It also raises a potential problem for AP in his Vikings locker room. If he is secretly trying to find a way out how will the guys along side him trust him.

AP came to his own defense, saying the call was nothing more than a generic convo between two colleagues and he would love to retire as a Viking. That scenario could very well be true, but the way the call occurred and the secrecy around it allows some doubt to creep in.
