Lauren Morelli had only been married for five months before assuming a writing position for the lead character, Piper, on OITNB. Through writing steamy story lines for the lesbian relationship between characters, Piper and Alex Vause, she realized that she could envision herself in their shoes. She lived vicariously through the relationship using her writing as a mouthpiece for her very own desires.

“I found a mouthpiece for my own desires and a glimmer of what my future could look like.”

According to TMZ, Morelli says that she began to feel like a fraud. She was clearly gay BUT married to a man.

Divorce documents say the split between Morelli and her husband, Steve Basilone, is amicable. She gets to keep her Lexus luxury car and apartment and he walks away with the Mazda Hatchback. Basilone saw this ship sailing which I guess made it a clean break.
