The league faced strong criticism for their handling of domestic violence incidents. The Ray Rice incident called for change in the policies set in place. In hopes of remedying their image, Goodell visited the hotline’s headquarters over the weekend. Hit the jump for details.

Roger Goodell was “moved to tears” when he heard the stories of women who are the victims of domestic violence.

The embattled NFL commissioner spent three hours Saturday at the nondescript headquarters of the National Domestic Violence Hotline in Austin, and got a reality check when he began to hear details of the abuse women face.

“At one point he was physically moved to tears as he heard stories from our advocates about what women were encountering, that we took today,” Hotline CEO Katie Ray-Jones told the Associated Press.

Goodell is embroiled in criticism for the way he has handled recent abuse cases, beginning with his tepid two-game suspension of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice following Rice’s attack on his then-fiancee in February. Goodell hit Rice with an indefinite suspension after a video of Rice knocking his now-wife out cold in an Atlantic City hotel elevator surfaced earlier this month.

On Sept. 19, the NFL pledged a multiyear, multi-million dollar commitment of money and other resources to the Hotline and other organizations that work with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
