Peter Kassig, 26, from Indianapolis, was a former U.S. Army Ranger who was deployed to Iraq in 2007. He also started his own aid group called Special Emergency Response and Assistance (SERA). The aid group helped supply Syrian refugees with cooking stoves, blankets, propane fuel tanks and other things. Kassig was very passionate on learning about the Middle East.

U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly, a Democrat from Indiana, stated, “This is an unimaginably devastating situation for any parent to endure. My prayers are with Peter’s parents at this terrible time … I ask for respect of the Kassig family’s privacy as they seek to navigate this heartbreaking situation.” He disappeared in October 2013 and his kidnappers requested that his family keep silent about his abduction. His parents said, “We ask everyone around the world to pray for the Henning family, for our son, and for the release of all innocent people being held hostage in the Middle East and around the globe.”
