The forthcoming Aaliyah biopic has been shrouded in controversy since its inception, as the late singer’s family is not in support of the film, and have spoke out numerous times on their stance. For this reason, plus the backlash of many protective fans, Disney star Zendaya Coleman decided to drop out of the lead role early on. Lifetime still pushed on, however, and will finally be debuting Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B on Saturday, November 15.

The film’s new star, newcomer Alexandra Shipp, recently sat down with Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier, and spoke on the controversial role. Check out what she said below.
