Eric Decker will learn more about New York fans over time, but for now he is getting a rude awakening. The wideout who signed a $36 million dollar contract to join the franchise picked the wrong time to try and inspire Jets fans. With the team looking like a complete joke on the field, Decker tweeted out asking fans to tell him why they love the Jets. There isn’t much to love about a 1-7 team and fans let him have it and then let his wife, country singer Jesse James Decker, have it after she tried to defend her husband while also talking trash to the fans.

It started Wednesday, when Decker caught serious flak on the social media site for asking his followers to explain why they love the Jets so much.

As you might expect, Decker got alot of sarcastic answers, as well as personal attacks on his lack of production on the field and people wanting him out of New York. His wife then made it worse by tweeting “You think he really cares what y’all think haters? He’s laughing his ass alllll the way home … Life is pretty good here, can’t complain.”

All that sounds like to fans is “hey shutup, we got our money so we are good”, even if that was not her intent. The threats started pouring in from fans after that and eventually led to her completely deleting her twitter account.

For his part, Decker handled it pretty well.

“You’ve got to expect that,” he told reporters in the locker room. “Obviously, everyone’s entitled to their opinion. I don’t think it’s against the law to try to unite or reach out to fans. When you’re in the position you are, people obviously enjoy winning a lot more than losing — I get that — but they still love the team aspect.

“The more you can be … personal with them, I think the more they feel part of the team,” he continued. “For me, that’s the biggest thing, making fans feel like they are important, because they are.”

Welcome to New York Eric.
