Denny Hamlin, who is good friends with six-time NBA champion and current Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan, had him as a guest at Homestead-Miami Speedway to watch him run for his first NASCAR Sprint Cup championship. Jordan spent some time in a suite and later stood in Hamlin’s pit box area to watch the race.

“I’ve been a basketball fan for a really long time. He’s just a good friend that came to support a friend,” Hamlin said.

“He’s a huge race fan. When he came in the motor home earlier today, he talked about converting all these people to race fans. That’s awesome that he thinks so much to come down and support his friend.”

So he bought tickets? Not quite.

“He asked for tickets. I told him we could handle that.”

But Hamlin, who finished seventh, rued not being able to win his first ring as Kevin Harvick won his first championship in NASCAR’s premier series with his fifth victory of the season.

“Wish I could have one ring to his six. We’ll have to wait another year.”
