Russell Simmons for "Keep the Peace"

Refusing to rest on his laurels as one of the culture’s architects or just do a few things on #BlackLivesMatter and be an “armchair revolutionary,” the Hip Hop mogul Russell Simmons Brings the Peace to L.A. High School this week in a big way!

Russell Simmons Brings the Peace to L.A. High School by giving a motivational speech to 500 students at the Crenshaw District’s Dorsey High School on topics including police brutality, respecting one another and unifying as a people. Simmons’ visit was mainly to implore a perspective on how better behavior can better our communities and generate true “power of the people.” And it didn’t stop at just talk:

“Simmons’ main objective is to increase the peace, respect the police, and “when they show up, you gotta shut up,” he advised. “How you respond to him is gonna feed how he responds to you.” Russell had the students sign a pledge that planned to establish peace in their everyday lives. With this approach to peace in the community is reminiscent of the prominent past leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we hope it brings some enlightenment.”

With everything that’s gone on with #BlackLivesMatter Russell Simmons Brings the Peace to L.A. High School is a welcome bit of positive news. It was only last week when the charges were dropped on the police officer who shot sleeping 7 year old Aiyana Jones, a week before that the official announcement of the federal government throwing out the Darren Wilson case and dissolving any hope of even a civil rights lawsuit. Before that it was a landmark arrest by the FBI on New Jersey officers in relation to a police brutality case. That in addition to unemployment, the rising cost of living, the growing gap between rich and poor, and more paint a picture in need of more loving, hopeful and useful colors.

Well in case you forgot (or for your reasons are ignoring the fact) that it’s Black History Month, Russell Simmons Brings the Peace to L.A. High School was sponsored by Community Coalition and his recently launched RushCard “Keep the Peace” campaign–a great way to be active if you’re looking for an outlet! Check the vid!!!
