Train Derailment Causes Massive Explosion and Oil Spill in VA as crude oil leaked all over Fayette County, West Virginia around 1:30PM.

No injuries have been reported though one home has been destroyed from Train Derailment Causes Massive Explosion and Oil Spill in VA. CNN reports nearly 30 of the train’s more than 100 cars came off the tracks, “filling the sky with thick clouds of fire and smoke.” The spill did however spill into Kanawha River, which provides drinking water for the Kanawha and Fayette counties:

“Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued a state of emergency for both those counties Monday night. Area residents are being urged to conserve water.”

Residents have also been asked to evacuate from within half a mile of the Train Derailment Causes Massive Explosion and Oil Spill in VA. Many are noting the repeated dangers we keep seeing from the transport of crude oil as well as the effects of heavy weather on the crash and spill. Though some note it’s a necessary gamble, spokesman for the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety Lawrence Messina says authorities are still collecting information on the scene and nothing is yet concrete.

“We’ve had some severe winter weather conditions here with significant snowfall. We don’t yet know whether that’s a factor in this.”
