Researchers will continue the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. The three countries that are leading the effort will re-examine any data and come up with a new plan if the plane is not found by May. Liow Tiong Lai told a group of foreign reporters on the eve of the anniversary of the plane’s disappearance, that he remains optimistic that the plane should be in the area of the southern Indian Ocean, which is where the search has been.

Malaysia’s government declared that all 239 people on board were presumed dead. Australia, Malaysia and China will meet next month to discuss the search efforts. Liow Tiong Lai says, “By the end of May, if we still can’t find the plane, then we will have to go back to the drawing board…We rely on the expert group…to come up with the plan. I am cautiously optimistic it should be in this area.”

He says the ships that are looking for debris from the plane have searched more than 40 percent of the 60,000 square feet area where the search has been. Australian Transport Minister Warren Truss said that if the plane isn’t found by May then they will expand the hunt beyond the current search zone.
