The verdict is in, Dunkin Donuts Taking What Chemical Out of Their Donuts? is actually titanium dioxide, normally used by the coffee and donut chain to make the powdered donuts “appear brighter” (ya don’t say???). What got many activists on their feet about this however was more than just the fact the chemical is also found in sunscreen and paint among other things. CNN Money reports:
The group As You Sow argues titanium dioxide that can cause DNA and chromosomal damage when consumed…The group claims that titanium dioxide is a nanomaterial, which is not regulated or prohibited by the Food and Drug Administration. But As You Sow argues that there is not enough information on their effects on humans. “Asbestos, also a nanomaterial, was used before its harms were fully understood, leading to a costly health crisis,” the group said.
Well damn…asbestos tho??? Who knew Dunkin Donuts Taking What Chemical Out of Their Donuts? would be affecting our genetic make-up…of course the company is maintaining the chemical actually does not* meet the definition of nanomaterial but they’re taking it out anyway. Choosing to keep it politically correct and not totally blast the chain, the advocacy group issued this statement:
“This is a groundbreaking decision,” said Danielle Fugere, president and chief counsel of the group. “Dunkin’ has demonstrated strong industry leadership by removing this potentially harmful ingredient from its donuts.”
