Original: Otis Byrd had been convicted for murdering a woman in 1980 and was paroled in 2006. Now CNN and multiple news sources are reporting state police, forensics, civil rights authorities and the FBI Investigating Black Man Found Hanging From Tree In Mississippi. He’s documented as missing since March 2nd though the report was not filed until March 8th officially. Authorities say so far “it’s unclear whether it was a suicide or homicide.”

What is clear though, emphasized by the presence of the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division and the Feds, is if Otis Byrd did not kill himself, then we’re in ‘hate crime’ territory (among other truths, #facts and ‘damn shames’). The FBI Investigating Black Man Found Hanging From Tree In Mississippi are anchoring two parallel investigations. One is into the actual death and the other is to see if there are in fact any civil rights violations. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are also on the scene.

Officers located a man hanging in the woods near Roddy Road a half mile from his last known residence,” according to the FBI statement.

The Claiborne County Sheriffs Department and the Mississippi Wildlife Fisheries and Parks were the first to report prior to the FBI Investigating Black Man Found Hanging From Tree In Mississippi.
