Before Katy Perry burst on to the scene with her breakout hit “I Kissed A Girl,” it was offered to Macy Gray! At least, according to what Macy says.

In a new backstage interview, the “I Try” singer says she was given the record as a demo way before Katy was in the picture, but she’d ultimately passed on it…and it went on to be a number one record.

Yeah, but way back. It was a demo, and it didn’t sound nothing like it. But the hook was there. I was like, “Um, no.” But it wasn’t like Tyler Perry’s – I mean – what’s her name? Katy Perry! It wasn’t like a big rock thing, you know? It was a little like, it had this groovy bass line. I just wasn’t into it.

She also revealed that she turned down another number one smash as well. At least she has “I Try”! Check out the full clip below.
