Method Man got his break with the Wu-Tang Clan when they made their official debut in 1993. However, his career didn’t skyrocket until one of his most memorable songs hit the airwaves. It’s been 20 years to the day (Apr 25) since “I’ll Be There for You/You’re All I Need to Get By” featuring Mary J. Blige made it’s debut. Since then, both Blige and the Staten Island rapper have flourished into the successful entertainers they are today. Meth was given the opportunity to reflect on the anniversary and showed nothing but love towards Mary. Find out what he had to say about the veteran R&B singer after the jump!

It’s been 20 years since Method Man and Mary. J Blige’s Grammy-winning collaborative effort “I’ll Be There for You/You’re All I Need to Get By” first aired on the radio. The song is a remix of his song off Meth’s debut album “All I Need,” which samples Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “You’re All I Need To Get By.” After Tical dropped in November of 1994, Sean “Diddy” Combs remixed the song with lyrics from The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Me & My Bitch.” The remix went on to earn Method Man is first Grammy in 1996. The Wu-Tang rapper spoke with HipHopDX and reflected on the song that helped glorify his solo career.

“I owe Mary my solo career and she can have it,” he told HipHopDX. “I owe her, because that’s what really put me over the top and set me apart from everybody that year when that was out, you know? I think there was a lot of copy cats that came behind that but that solidified my career right there, so hats off to Mary. I love her for that.”

Meth also said that starting out with the Wu was the main reason he even got the chance to work with Blige at the time.

“Wu Tang, I owe them for the fame off top,” he said. “That’s what got Mary in the door. I owe Wu Tang for even getting Mary in the door. Ain’t no Method Man without Wu Tang I know that for a fact.”

RZA also got ahold of the track and produced the Razor Sharp remix. In 1995, they used RZA’s version for the official music video for the song. Watch it below.
