Damion “World” Hardy is doing life in prison after ordering six murder hits and leading a drug gang out of Lafayette Gardens housing projects in Bedford-Stuyvesant about fifteen to twenty years ago. After opening statements and finger-pointing went down, the trial had only lasted a mere three weeks before Hardy was convicted.

“The defendants wreaked havoc in the Bed-Stuy community of Lafayette Gardens and beyond,” prosecutor, Soumya Dayananda, had told jurors in closing arguments about Hardy as well as his co-defendant, Aaron Granton – the hit man. Of course, the prosecution was not the only one to speak their peace. Families of the victims were allowed to speak also.

“I could not wrap my head around the fact that my baby, my only son, is gone,” said May Davis, the mother of rival gang member Ivery Davis. “Seeing mothers with their sons is a constant reminder of what I will never have the privilege to do again.”

Mr. Davis was a rival drug dealer in the housing project; Mr. Davis’s nephew had killed Mr. Hardy’s brother, also a drug dealer.

According to the New York Times, ‘Zakia Baum, sister of Darryl and Tyrone Baum, brothers whom prosecutors said Mr. Hardy had targeted because of their association with Mr. Davis’ could not even fight back the tears before running out of the courtroom. The second time, however, Baum went in stern. “I’m not going to sit here and pour my heart out to either World or eBay because I know they don’t care,” she said, of the defendants’ nicknames. “I feel you are an incredibly dangerous, selfish, vicious and insecure soul who killed because it empowered you.” she adds

Of course, the two both had their words of innocence, but they were not believable. When asked by Judge Frederic Block if he had anything to say, Hardy said, “I am 100 percent completely innocent.” Deny, Deny … DENY some more.

Jean Barrett, Hardy’s lawyer said that she would appeal the conviction on the grounds of mental illness. Although he is a classified schizophrenic, it’s not going to work.
