Three people were shot and killed in their SVU just before midnight on Wednesday evening. Two women and a man who is an admitted gang member were killed while another woman was wounded after a gunman opened fire on the the parked vehicle in Wyandanch, Long Island. More details after the jump.
The dead victims have been identified as 25-year-old William Madrey, 23-year-old Stephanie Almedina Rivera, and 23-year-old Ciara Smith. The horrific crime took place at the intersection of Davidson Street near Troy Avenue. According to homicide Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer, “A gunman came upon the vehicle and opened fire,” before fleeing the scene.
Police are investigating if this shooting is indeed gang related as Madrey, who was sitting in the drivers seat in a known gang member. The detective said, “We are investigating if gang involvement had a place in this shooting,” and notably addded, “investigating all avenues.”
Distraught relatives and neighbors spoke out about the crime that takes place so frequently in their neighborhood.
The fourth victim who was a woman has not been identified but is expected to make a full recovery. Police are offering a $3,000 reward for information about the shooting. Virginia Dawson-Taylor, president of a neighborhood watch group said, “The police department is not doing enough for our neighborhood. They should be doing more patrolling, they should be doing more surveillance out there and they should be on top of it,” she added “There’s a lot of drug activity, and it’s filtering down to the street.”
Henry James said he was in his basement when he heard about gunshots but didn’t think much of it. He said, “That’s nothing unusual for this area, this is like the Wild West.”
Police are still searching for a suspect and a motive for this shooting.
