FBI director James Comey admitted this morning that it was a clerical error that allowed Roof to purchase the gun. The 21-year old should have been denied because of a prior arrest for possession of drugs. However what the director calls a ‘breakdown’ between police departments and counties, allowed him to purchase a .45 caliber handgun.

The director said, “this rips all of our hearts out” and “we are all sick this happened.”

The FBI is launching a full investigation to find out exactly where things went wrong and are also reviewing the 3-day gun review policy. The FBI had three days to block the purchase that occurred on April 11th and ultimately lead to the June 17th shooting.

Roof is now facing murder charges for the racially motivated murder of nine people a the Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston.
