Congratulations are in order for Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson. Both stars were nominated for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress In a Drama Series’ for How To Get Away With Murder and Empire. The news of their nominations comes with great feeling of excitement and joy, not only for the women, but for the fact that this will be the first time that two black women have earned an Emmy nomination in the same year in this category.

Not only has their never been two black women nominated for an Emmy in the category ‘Outstanding Lead Actress In a Drama Series’ but a black women has never won an Emmy in this category. Before Kerry Washington’s nomination in 2013, the only black woman to be awarded with a nomination was Cicely Tyson in 1995.

This year hopefully we can look forward to the Emmy voters to make history and change this mind blowing reality. Henson and Davis both has outstanding and record-breaking first seasons for Empire and How To Get Away With Murder.

So far, Violia Davis has celebrated her nomination on Twitter saying “In great company with my sister @TherealTaraji! Also, @NiecyNash! Congrats to all on the outstanding work!” and “Such a wonderfully diverse list of talented artists recognized this year. So proud. Again, congrats to everyone!!! #Emmys”
