Warren Diepraam, a Waller County prosecutor, attempted to shed some light on just what happened to Sandra Bland during the time from her arrest until she was found dead in her jail cell some days later.

According to Diepraam, the medical examiner payed close attention Bland’s eyelids, eyeballs and face overall, there were no injuries consistent with a struggle, however there was a bruise on her next that indicated and was consistent with suicide. He said, “There were no bite marks or other injuries on her face, on her lips, on her tongue, which would be consistent with a violent struggle.”

He continued to say if there was a violent struggle, they would also have seen damage to her trachea and esophagus, which they did not.

Diepraam did acknowledge approximately 30 “cut marks,” healing on her left wrist, as well as abrasions on her wrists which are consistent with struggling while handcuffed. He added, Bland had scabs on her back and right shoulder blade which are consistent with force being applied.

Die praam said that these early autopsy results give “very overwhelming evidence,” he stressed that the case is not closed. He said, “I feel comfortable that their findings are correct, but there’s still a lot of information out there so we’re not forming any conclusions at this point,” he said. “Nothing is certain.”

Bland’s family is challenging the findings, they maintain that Sandra would never commit suicide and are unhappy with the inconsistency in her booking sheet.
