In a very private meeting with a handful of journalists at his Paisley Park Studios, Prince opened up about TIDAL and why he feels so strongly about the streaming service. He slammed recored labels for not allowing artists to have a free range of creative control but more importantly, not having enough money and resources for streaming. According to Prince, artists should be paid directly by streaming services and cut out the middle man. TIDAL allows him to have full creative control of his music as well as the money generated. He said, “Once we have our own resources, we can provide what we need for ourselves,” adding, “Jay Z spent $100 million of his own money to build his own service. We have to show support for artists who are trying to own things for themselves.”

Prince also gave a small piece of advice for artists coming up in the industry. He said, “Record contracts are just like — I’m gonna say the word – slavery,” he said. “I would tell any young artist … don’t sign.” Prince has always been against the industry and has taken as stand in every way he can. Back in 1995, he protested Warner Bros. Records by putting the word “Slave” on his face.

Prince has plans to release his next 3rdEyeGirl full length album, HITNRUN, exclusively on TIDAL.
