In the wake of what seems to be constant police brutality towards unarmed black men, some officers are beginning to second guess themselves. It’s still unclear just how Janard Cunningham a 34 year-old man got his hands on the gun. According to police reports, Last Friday, the detective who who wishes to remain anonymous, stopped a car he saw driving wildly on the road. The officer called for back-up and told Cunningham to stay in the car. Allegedly, he refused, got out of the car, and became violent. He aggressively questioned the officer about the reason for being pulled over, grabbed the detective’s gun and pistol whipped him.

According to Heath Boackle, a sergeant with the Birmingham Police Department “The last thing the officer remembers is getting sucker-punched in a parking lot. The next thing, he’s waking up in a hospital bed with staples in his head.”

The detective explains he chose not to use force out of fear of being on the news. He said, “I hesitated because I didn’t want to be in the media like I am right now.” He added, “A lot of officers are being too cautious because of what’s going on in the media.”

The officer suffered several injuries to his head and face, but is expected to make a full recovery. Cunningham is being charged with attempted murder and being held without bond.
