It’s been no secret, since the Black Lives Matter movement began there have been much debate on what the term actually means. Some people take the phrase out of context with the belief that what’s being said is that ‘Only Black Lives Matter’, while others understand the real reasoning behind the words; including President Barack Obama.

Today, while Obama was also addressing the criminal just system, which includes sentencing issues, he took the time to announce his stance on the Black Lives Matter movement.

“I think everybody understands that all lives matter,” he began.

“I think the reason that the organizers used the phrase ‘Black Lives Matter’ was not because they are suggesting that nobody else’s lives matter. Rather, what they were suggesting was there is a specific problem that is happening in the African American community that is not happening in the other communities, and that is a legitimate issue that we have got to address.”

The President also brought the fact that this movement is not new, just reformed with a new language.

“The African American community is not just making this up. It’s real, and there’s a history behind it and we have to take it seriously.”

Well said.
