It was an intense and extremely close game with the Miami Hurricanes against the Duke Blue Devils fighting for the last point, literally. In a wild play that consisted of eight laterals by the Miami team, resulted in a touch down and a three-point victory for the Hurricanes with zero time on the clock. With the game over and the score in favor of Miami, the team celebrated, while others speculated.

Emotions were at their highest as fans and players awaited the last play of the game. Duke kicked the ball with six seconds left and the Miami players fielded the ball and set off to the end zone. The path was not clear, as the Blue Devils attempted to stop the run. Every time Duke got close to sealing their win, the ball was flipped to another Miami player.

More than six seconds and eight laterals later, the Hurricanes found themselves celebrating in the end zone. They hugged and jumped on each other when the news of a flag in the backfield brought everything to a halt. The flag was thrown in regards to an illegal block in the back, but did not take away the touchdown.

Former official and VP of Officiating for the NFL, Mike Periera discussed the call on the block and touchdown, saying that,

“Duke got tricked on Halloween.”

According to Periera, the block that the ACC officials considered illegal, was actually clean. But that’s not the only problem that lied. Periera also said that a knee was down somewhere between the madness, and that the TD should not count in favor of Miami.

The play was under review for at least ten minutes before the final call of a touchdown was made.

Periera now holds the title of rules analyst for Fox Sports, which makes us wonder, with his experience and expertise in officiating, who really has the wrong call here?
