Spike Lee has recently put out a trailer or his new film, “Chi-raq.” Spike has received a lot of criticism on the trailer. He decided to take to Vimeo to respond to the comments and hush the critics.

The director of the movie, Spike Lee himself, made a statement saying,

“The trailer was released and there’s very humorous moments in the trailer. Some people are going to twist it and think that this is a comedy. Chi-Raq is not a comedy. Chi-Raq is a satire. And there’s a difference between satire and comedy.”

The film is basically an adaptation of “Lysistrata.” That is a greek play with the setting in inner-city Chicago.

“In no way, shape or form are we not respectful of the situation that is happening in Chi-Raq. In no way, shape or form are we making fun of the lives that have been murdered with this senseless violence. So people, don’t get it twisted. Don’t get it twisted, this film is about serious business. There’s many films and we can look in the history of American cinema that treated very serious subject matter and had humor in them. This whole statement, ‘I gotta laugh to keep from crying,’ I think that’s apropos with Chi-Raq.”

Chicago rappers Lil Bibby and Lil Durk took to Twitter to share their thoughts about the trailer. Durk tweeted,

“Respect Spike Lee but that don’t look like a Chiraq film.”

That tweet was later deleted.

Bibby tweeted,

“That Chiraq trailer look like a Parody.”

Can we just cut Spike some slack and let him do his thing before we start judging?
