In quite an interesting twist of irony, Michael Szeliga of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department reportedly showed up drunk to a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) ceremony, where he was being presented with an award for landing more than 100 DUI arrests.

Now, this is stupid no doubt, but it MAY have been less stupid if he’d just been getting drunk at the bar outside of the venue or something and stumbled in. But nope! Police believe he drove himself to the conference, thus doing the very same thing he’s been handing out arrests for. Nice. For his part, Szeliga denies it and claims he just had “one or two drinks” beforehand.

One of Szeliga’s supervisors described him as “wasted” after seeing him at the conference, and ended up sending him back to his hotel room. He’s since been reprimanded and given one day of paid suspension, and required to write an apology letter to various supervisors. He will still be allowed to pursue his career dream of becoming a detective in the sheriff’s Crimes Against Children unit, however.
