“(In Newark) I see so many people that watched me grow up, you know, watched me fail, watched me stumble, watched me make mistakes, watched me succeed. It means so much to me have the support,” Jordan said after receiving the key, adding, “It means everything.”

Jordan addressed the crowd explaining the importance of coming back to his hometown and sharing his life experiences. He said, “It gives the young people a chance to see someone who looks like them on screen,” he added, “To see somebody in a positive light, not really dragged down by stereotypes.”

The mayor sung Jordan’s praises remembering him as a teen attending Newark’s Arts High School. He said “He wanted to play basketball, like a lot of these kids have ideas about what they can do,” he continued, “I think God had other plans for him. That didn’t work out, thank God that he pursued his acting career.”
