Tom Coughlin met with the New York Giants today as expected and stepped down as the head coach.

The writing was pretty much on the wall yesterday as Coughlin’s family all came to the Giants final game of the season all wearing “Coughlins Crew” sweatshirts.  Following the game, Coughlin entered the tunnel to a standing ovation.  During the press conference he wouldn’t comment on his future plans and from the presser things seemed a bit odd, not like someone retiring.

Prior to today’s announcement, quarterback Eli Manning spoke to the media about Coughlin, the only coach he’s played for during his NFL career.

Several reporters said it was the most emotional the quarterback has been, fighting back tears.

“He definitely has not failed these players,” Manning said of Coughlin. “We failed him.”

Coughlin led the Giants to two Super Bowl championships and three NFC East division titles.  He posted a 102-90 record in 12 seasons with the team.
