The Zika virus has now made its way to the United States. First people thought the virus was being spread through mosquitos, but now we see that the virus has been spread through sexual contact. The Centers for Disease Control has just confirmed the first non-travel related Zika case.

The CDC released a statement saying,

“A person who recently traveled to an area with Zika virus transmission returned to the United States and developed Zika-like symptoms. The person later tested positive for Zika, along with their sexual partner, who had not traveled to the area.”

The unidentified person who had went to another country went to Venezuela. Although the CDC has not confirmed if the disease is transmittable through sex, a man from Tahiti had his semen tested and allegedly tested positive for the virus. Also back in 2008, it was said that a man traveled out of the U.S. and came back giving the virus to his wife after sex. As of right now, there is no cure. People are being advised to stay away from mosquitos and practice safe sex.

Zachary Thompson, the DCHHS director says ,

“Now that we know Zika virus can be transmitted through sex, this increases our awareness campaign in educating the public about protecting themselves and others. Next to abstinence, condoms are the best prevention method against any sexually-transmitted infections.”
