The Grammy’s are changing up their tune as to who will be getting recognized for coveted Grammy awards in the future. The rule change could serve as a very positive look for hip-hop artists, considering hip-hop awards are rarely recognized in today’s age – despite being the most influential music genre in the world.

After 58 years of the Grammys, only two Hip Hop acts have ever won the coveted Album Of The Year honor – Lauryn Hill (The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, 1999) and OutKast (Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, 2004). Surprisingly, rap legends 2Pac, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Run-DMC, Ice Cube, Rakim and many others have never won a Grammy.

A big reason why hip-hop isn’t awarded as much as it should be is because most of the voting members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) are made up of mainly older people who aren’t as “hip” to popular music (which is absurd, your supposed to do your job).

NARAS President Neil Portnow told Hits Daily Double:

“We’ve done in this past year a requalification piece, so if you’re a member and you’re about to renew, you will have to go through a requalification submission of the application. To the extent that you meet those requirements and you’re current and actually a practicing member of the industry, you can continue to have the ability to be a voting member. If not, you can continue as an associate member, but not voting, so that’s a big step in keeping the current membership relevant.”

Let’s see how this holds up.
