Former Redskins linebacker H.B. Blades had an unexpected come up in late 2013. He randomly received a $40,000 payout from the team he hadn’t played for since 2011. It was a clerical error on the part of the team but when they tried to collect the money back, Blades was not trying to hear it.

Blades was cut by the Skins back before the 2011 regular season got underway. As part of a severance package, he received $40,000 in September on 2012. That payout was legit but then in December 2013, the team accidentally paid him again. They caught the mistake the following month and asked him for the money back to which he refused.

After he didn’t repay the money, the NFL Management Council filed a grievance on behalf of the Redskins on Feb. 6, 2014, seeking reimbursement of erroneous payment.

In an arbitration hearing later that year, Blades agreed to repay $20,658.88, which represented his “take-home pay” after taxes and withholdings, in installments.

However, still no payments ever came from Blades so we find ourselves here now. A summons filed Friday notified Blades that he had 21 days from receipt of the document to reply to the Redskins’ complaint. Failure to respond, it noted, would result in “judgment by default.”

The Redskins drafted him in 2007 and he had a modest few years with the team before being let go in 2011. Considering how small of a sum the money is in the big picture to the Redskins, it is surprising they are going through all these measures to get it back.
