The U.S. Capitol and the White House are currently on lockdown after reports of gunshots fired at the Capitol Visitor Center. Congressional staffers were alerted to lockdown and move to sheltered areas. People outdoors were told to “seek cover away from the area.”

UPDATE

A U.S. Capitol police shot a male suspect Monday afternoon as a result of the shooting that took place at the Capitol Visitor Center. A female bystander was also hurt during the incident but no U.S. Capitol Police officers. The gunman attempted to go through the metal detectors at the Capitol Visitor Center entrance.

D.C. Metropolitan Police spokesperson Alice Kim says,

“We are aware of reports of shots fired and the shelter in place. We are working with the Capitol Hill Police Department to investigate the situation,”
