According to a lawsuit filed by former Rockstar North president, Leslie Benzies, against his ex-employers has brought to light the company’s earnings for just their microtransactions alone, and the amount is through the sky!

Rockstar’s GTA V multiplayer service, GTA Online, brought in half a billion dollars since the online service’s release in 2013 on October for previous-gen consoles and November for the next-gen consoles.

Microtransactions for GTA Online include real life currency exchange for in-game currency, outfits, weapons, vehicles, and more. Apparently these must be appealing features because 8 million players who log on to the game weekly are certainly opening their wallets for them.

This is a serious cash cow for Rockstar and any other game developing firms whose games offer microtransactions, since microtransactions pretty much open up a 100% profit margin.

This is because microtransactions are subject to minimal development and app store commission costs since they’re only side creations for a game after its implementation.

Leslie Benzies is suing Rockstar Games and their parent company, Take Two Interactive, for $150 million in unpaid royalties, along with what Benzies claims as ‘numerous deceptions’.

GTA V just sold 60 million units worldwide this past February since the game’s release in 2013. Fans of Rockstar Games should be excited for the company’s profits as this may mean an increased budget for the development of future games, which may lead to more features and possibly innovations never before seen by gamers for future release.
