Former Syracuse defensive back Naesean Howard was arrested on charges of stabbing two men, reportedly current Orange defensive backs Chauncey Scissum and Corey Winfield.

Syracuse.com released the details of what happened as told by someone who was there.

An outdoor barbecue on a warm spring evening turned chaotic when a Syracuse football player was ambushed and stabbed by his former teammate, according to a friend who was there.

Chauncey Scissum was stabbed near the jaw by Naesean Howard at the party, according to the friend.

It was at that moment, the friend said, that a second SU football player, Corey Winfield, intervened and attempted to push Howard off Scissum, exposing himself to stab wounds in the chest, ribs and arms.

“It literally just happened out of nowhere,” the friend said. “It came out of nowhere. There was no argument before. It just happened.”

The friend said Winfield stepped in front of Howard to keep him away from Scissum, who recently had surgery and was not in a position to defend himself.

Howard, 20, faces two charges of assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree for the alleged stabbing, local media have reported, citing police.

Howard was arraigned in city court Monday.  He is being held on a $40,000 bond.

Scissum will stay in the hospital for a few days for observation, his father told the newspaper. Upstate University Hospital listed Winfield in stable condition early Sunday, reports said.

University officials said Howard had been suspended from Syracuse indefinitely.
