A source from Twitter reportedly told Bloomberg that in the next few weeks they will not be including photos and links in their 140-character limit. However, since the decision hasn’t been made public, Twitter declined to comment on the change.

The move comes as a larger plan to allow users more flexibility when using the site. As it is, Twitter has been playing around looking for new ways to display text. Their experiments with new features will be based on the behavior of their users as well.

Twitter has a 140-character limit because it was originally an efficient way for getting people to fit all of the important information in an SMS style service. This quick way of getting people to post is what set the company apart from all other services that were similar.

Eventually the site grew into a mecca for live events, discussion, and promotion. So now by removing their character requirement for links and photos, this may encourage their users to include more media to their tweets!
