NYPD commissioner Bill Bratton is under a lot of fire after calling referring to rappers as “basically thugs” who carry violence around with them in their careers. The comment stemmed after a shooting broke out during rapper T.I.’s concert in NYC’s Irving Plaza.

While speaking live to New York news station WCBS 880, Bratton says,

“The crazy world of these so-called rap artists who are basically thugs that basically celebrate violence they did all their lives, and unfortunately that violence often times manifests itself during their performances, and that’s exactly what happened last evening,”

Host Wayne Cabot began to speak on ‘thug culture’ and asked Bratton if he “left that behind” in the 1990s when he first served as New York police commissioner, he went on to say,

“The background of a lot of these young people, they are significant artists in that world…but unfortunately the lifestyles that they lived…often time follows them into the entertainment world and the success they have in it. … It’s unfortunate. You’d like to think that with all the wealth that comes from the fame, that they’ll be able to turn their lives around but they continue hanging out with the same people they hung out with when they came out of that world of desperation, poverty, and crime.”

The internet immediately fired back at the comment. One person took to Twitter to say,

Can’t believe Bratton said this knowing how much violence happens at shows regardless of genre

Another person pulled up a article of a shooting happening at a charity game and said,

Did Bratton comment on the thugs fighting at a charity game yet? ?
