There will be no charges brought against the parents whose 3-year-old son fell into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo late last month, forcing the zoo keepers to kill a 17-year-old endangered gorilla. The father was not present on the trip, but the mother was, and authorities are satisfied with deeming it an unfortunate accident.

“Had she been in the bathroom smoking crack and let her kids run around the zoo, that’d be a different story, but that’s not what was happening here,” Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said in a press conference. “None of the witnesses interviewed described the mother as anything but attentive to her children,” he added, noting that she had “turned away for a few seconds to attend to another one of her young children,” when the boy entered the enclosure.

The zoo will not face any charges either.
