Seattle Seahawks defensive end, Michael Bennett is holding a football camp in Hawaii this month. Steph Curry is holding a basketball camp this month, also in Hawaii but there is one major difference between the two camps. No, I’m not referring to the fact that the camps are for two different sports. The major difference is Bennett’s camp is absolutely free for kids, while Curry’s camp cost $2,000 or more per child. That is something Bennett does not appreciate and wasn’t scared to call him out on it.

“I see a lot of different athletes come through Hawaii whether it’s Steph Curry or whoever it is,” Bennett told KHON. “They all come here and it makes me mad, because I live in this community and I understand this community — that there’s so many kids who can’t afford to pay such a high amount of money. In my mind it’s like, how much money do you need before you start giving back for free? And I think a lot of athletes should start focusing on that.”

The fact that Bennett is a local to the community makes it understandable that he is taking the price of Curry’s camp personal. He knows there are plenty of kids in the area who are unable to afford something like that. He believes athletes who make pretty good money should be able to give back without having to profit.

“That comes from my mom and dad growing up in the community and always giving back,” Bennett said. “My dad was a part of the school board, my mom worked in the district for 20 years, and I just always wanted to give back and always make it free. Growing up, I know I wasn’t able to afford the things like go to to certain camps or do certain things.”

For the record, Curry’s camp sold out pretty much immediately so there are families with the money to spend but it’s nice to hear Bennett speak up for the ones who don’t.
